Along Cuba's highway, word of new president met with calm, hope
Like the traffic, life moves slowly along this Cuban highway. But on Sunday, word that the country had its first new president in nearly 50 years traveled fast, and encountered a range of opinions. For some residents in the towns and cities along the Carretera Central - the "Central Highway" - Raul Castro's elevation offers hope for change after decades of rule by his brother Fidel. But others favored calm and stability over any startling new approaches. The pothole-ridden highway runs east from Havana all the way to Cuba's second city, Santiago, on the extreme opposite end of the island, a journey of roughly 500 miles. Modern vehicles often have to slow down and wait for the chance to pass 1950s coupes, men on horseback, bicycles and rickshaws. In Santiago, 67-year-old retiree Alicia Menero was among a group of people lined up to buy ground pork at a government-run street stall.
CHANGE @ WORK: Widening your Web
Essentially, your presence is about establishing visibility in the online world and making connections that could prove valuable later. For that to work, you need to put some effort into it. In your online profile, for instance, if "you have just two sentences there, it shows you don't take this seriously," Pollak says. "You're not going to get the most benefit if don't make the most of your profile." So consider adding links and mention previous employers, special skills, buzzwords for your industry, even your "30-second elevator pitch" - especially if one motivation is the desire to hear from job recruiters. Pollak says her fiance's profile on LinkedIn was so compelling that even though he wasn't looking for a new job, an employer sought him out and offered him one.
Nelson's gas severance tax: details
He said he felt the measure had the strong support of Beebe, who he believes would veto any major change to the 7 percent rate.) Nelson said he and his committee, the Committee for a Fair Severence Tax, plan to start collecting signatures during the May 20 primary elections. The committee will have over seventy-five members -- at least one from each county. It will be going for 70,000 signatures in order to meet the threshold of 62,000 needed to put the initiative on the ballot. Nelson said he expected the campaign for the initiative to cost about $1 million, which he will obtain through personal fund-raising efforts. Nelson expressed confidence that Arkansans would vote in favor of the measure. He also downplayed fears that a tax increase would cause gas companies to take their business out of state.
