Former Lt. Gov. Wilder improving from bout with pneumonia

NASHVILLE — Former Lt. Gov. John Wilder has been hospitalized since last week with pneumonia but his family says he's doing better and should be home soon.

The 87-year-old Mason Democrat was admitted to a local hospital last Wednesday, Senate Democratic Caucus spokesman Mark Brown said today.

Family members told Brown that Wilder has been on antibiotics and that he's able to walk around. They hope he'll be able to return to his West Tennessee home as early as Tuesday, but doctors have not said exactly when.

Wilder, known for his rambling storytelling during his 36 years as Senate speaker, lost the job last January to Sen. Ron Ramsey, R-Blountville. Wilder confirmed in December that he plans to seek re-election.

At the time, Wilder, a pilot, told The Associated Press that he rides a bicycle daily and still regularly flies his small airplane.

City commissioners vote to require owners of vacant structures in ...

“We’ve presented a proposed sign ordinance draft to the Planning Commission, but they decided to continue the issue for, I think, 30 days,” Brown said in a pre-meeting briefing. “If they review (the ordinance) and recommend approval, it could be available by your March night meeting.”

Commissioners also voted to grant the Downtown Merchants Association an exemption to the city’s open-container law from 11 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. Saturday during the annual Mardi Gras celebration, and approved a request by Downtown Manager Don Buie to pass an ordinance requiring owners of vacant structures to register the structure with the Planning Department within 10 days of receiving notice of the designation by Code Enforcement.

“It’s a matter of safety,” Buie said after the meeting. “By giving a detailed registration of a vacant structure, the owners will provide police, fire and EMS an accounting of any potential dangers associated with the structure.

Paranoid son jailed for 8 years for manslaughter

Kenneth John McDermott was originally charged with murder but the court found he had diminished responsibility at the time of the killing. It did not give him a defence to unlawful killing but it did give him a defence to a murder charge. McDermott, 42, of the Gold Coast, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Kevin Walter McDermott, on August 31, 2003. Today, Justice John Byrne sentenced McDermott to eight years jail with a recommendation he be eligible to apply for parole after serving three years. He declared the 775 days McDermott had spent on remand as time served on the sentence. Prosecutor Todd Fuller said the matter had a lengthy history before both the Mental Health Court and the Court of Appeal. He said McDermott, who was suffering from depression at the time, visited his estranged father, stepmother and half sister and half brother at a property at Harlin, northwest of Brisbane near Kilcoy.

Neighbors thwart 5 home intruders

A woman was playing cards with some of her family in a home on Fort Wayne's south side Wednesday night when she heard what she thought was a gunshot coming from the first floor.

The woman told police she went downstairs just after 9 p.m. to investigate the noise and saw five men standing inside the home, a police report said. The men ordered the woman to give them money, police said.

The woman told officers that people had started to leave the neighboring home and that when the would-be robbers saw them, the men fled the house and got into a waiting vehicle, the police report said.

The woman told officers that she had never seen the men before.
