NINE years old and already deemed subprime: Katelyn Lowings was hoping to use her new Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account to save up for some cuddly toys for her new brother, 11-week-old Brandon. So on February 12 she applied, along with the rest of her year 4 classmates from Lurnea Public School, to open her first bank account. She eagerly awaited the arrival of her first passbook and a Dollarmites membership card which promised rewards of games and competitions on the bank's website, a money box and stickers. Five days later, however, Katelyn's mother, Barby Sims received a two-sentence letter from the Commonwealth Bank's account establishment manager at Melbourne's head office. The letter read: "Dear Miss Sims We acknowledge receipt of Katelyn's Youthsaver application dated 19 February 2008.
Viktor Schreckengost, 101; pioneering industrial designer, ceramist
Viktor Schreckengost, a pioneering industrial designer and ceramist who brought innovative mass-produced items to millions of American households starting in the 1930s, has died. He was 101.
Schreckengost, who founded the industrial design department at the Cleveland Institute of Art in the early 1930s, died Jan. 26 of causes related to old age, his stepson Chip Nowacek said.

Safety fear could push bike tours off summit
WAILUKU » A preliminary assessment does not seem to bode well for bicycle tours at Haleakala National Park. Park Superintendent Marilyn Parris said the draft assessment by a federal safety panel found bicycle tours pose among the highest risks of recreational injury and accidents in national parks. Parris suspended bicycle tours in the park on Oct. 10, after a couple of fatal accidents, and is planning to arrive at a decision about the future of the activity at Haleakala by mid-March. His previous best came at the 2007 Turtle Bay Intercollegiate when he tied for 5th in early November. Stewart led the way for NMSU as the team finished fourth in the 12 team tournament. The Aggies carded rounds of 296-299-302 for an 897. This is the third fourth place finish for NMSU this season and the third top-five of the season. Senior Matt Edwards finished the tournament strong as he shot a 1-over-par 73 in round three and finished in a tie for 22nd. He carded an 11-over-par 227 in the three rounds of play. Junior Travis Reid, who entered Tuesday in second place in the tournament, didn't finish play, being eliminated after a disqualification. Middle Tennessee State won the team tournament with Arkansas-Little Rock's Brian Whittle won the individual medal with a 5-under-par 211.
